This common condition among women is a type of vaginal inflammatory disease caused by an overgrowth of "bad" bacteria within the natural microflora of the vagina, disrupting its natural balance. Normally, "friendly" bacteria, or lactobacilli, outnumber "bad" bacteria in the vaginal microflora. However, if the opposite occurs, this balance is disturbed, leading to bacterial vaginosis.

The exact causes of bacterial vaginosis are not fully understood, but certain factors, such as unprotected sex or frequent vaginal douching, significantly increase the risk of developing this condition.

Symptoms include:

Clear, grayish, white, or greenish vaginal discharge
Unpleasant odor
Itching
Burning during urination

However, many women with bacterial vaginosis may not experience any of these symptoms.
